Stop Being a Doormat: The Art of Assertiveness & Setting Boundaries

Ever feel like a human doormat? You know, that person who says yes to everything—even when your soul is screaming NOOOO! Whether it’s taking on extra work, tolerating toxic relationships, or saying yes to your friend’s MLM “business opportunity” we’ve all been there. But let’s change that!

What Is Assertiveness?

Assertiveness is the secret sauce between passive and aggressive communication. It’s speaking up for yourself without steamrolling others. Picture yourself as a classy, confident queen (or king) who sets boundaries without guilt-tripping yourself into oblivion.

Signs You Need Better Boundaries:

✅ You say “yes” when you really mean “I’d rather walk on Legos.”✅ You apologize for things that aren’t your fault.✅ You feel resentful but don’t speak up.✅ You let your 3-year-old negotiate bedtime like a Wall Street pro.

How to Set Boundaries Like a Boss:

  1. Say No Like You Mean It – “No” is a complete sentence. Practice it. Love it. Use it.

  2. Ditch the Guilt – Saying no doesn’t make you mean. It makes you mentally healthy.

  3. Use ‘I’ Statements – “I feel overwhelmed when I take on too much” sounds way better than “You’re making my life miserable.”

  4. Enforce Your Boundaries – A boundary without follow-through is just a suggestion. Stick to it.

  5. Keep It Light – Humor can help. Try: “I’d love to, but my couch and I have a date.”

The Assertiveness Glow-Up

When you start standing up for yourself, magical things happen: ✨ You gain confidence.✨ You stop resenting people.✨ You attract healthier relationships.✨ You sleep better because you’re not up at 2 AM replaying awkward conversations.

Your Challenge: Start Small!

This week, practice one small boundary—maybe it’s saying no to that extra Zoom meeting or politely declining your neighbor’s 4-hour rant about their cat. You got this!
